Pomp and fanfare at Chinese New Year gala

spite of the heavy rains that hit the city that evening.
Twelve first class and colourful art troupes from China took turns to showcase the Asian giant’s rich culture through classical Chinese melodies, acrobatics and traditional dances much to the amusement of guests, who included members of the diplomatic corps, cabinet ministers and top Zanu-PF officials and some service chiefs.

In his welcome remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Lin Lin wished everyone sound health and good luck in 2013 and added,

“Last month we celebrated the Chinese New Year. I think you know Chinese people use 12 animals to mark different years. And in every 12 years there is a rotation.

“The year 2013 is the year of snake. Snake is also referred as mini-dragon. It symbolises longevity, prosperity and good fortune”.

Ambassador Lin said that the Chinese art troupe comprised artistes highly esteemed in China with a wealth of experience performing for overseas audiences.

They had come to Zimbabwe “with multiple objectives: firstly, to offer an excellent Oriental art show to Chinese people living in Zimbabwe as well as the locals; secondly, to promote understanding amongst the Zimbabwean people about China and the Chinese people; thirdly, to carry out exchanges with the Zimbabwean artists and learn from each other”.

In an interview after the show, the  Ambassador Lin highlighted the importance of promoting Zimbabwe/China relations through cultural exchange.

“The show was a success and also our efforts to bring mutual understanding to our two countries.
“This is not the last time we are bringing in Chinese performers as there is going to be more artistes coming to and from China for cultural exchange”, he said.
