LONDON. — So we all enjoying the African Cup of Nations then? No, didn’t think so. Aside from those who hold an African heritage and those football obsessives (the sort who can willingly ring off the full list of the last 10 champions of Iceland) this particular competition has barely raised any interest to most of us.
So why is this?
Could it be just down that due to the glut of football already readily available to us to assess via our television remote controls many fans simply do not have the time to tune in to yet another version of the sport?
Or is it the harsh brutal truth simply that there is no great appetite among the footballing fraternity for the competition which, unlike the Copa America, is not littered with major international forces?
Sadly the quest to land Africa’s greatest prize is now widely considered an irrelevance to many outside the football-mad continent. The insanely bi-annual policy of hosting the tournament and foolishness of scheduling it into the mid-season of the major European leagues leaves many feeling cold and deeply uninterested.
Throw in the fact that this year’s Cup of Nations was already undermined before a ball was even kicked in frustration following Morocco’s questionable decision to reject hosting it due to Ebola and it’s easy to understand why it no longer holds the same appeal it once had. — Metro.
