Poor service delivery riles councillors

Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume was taken to task by fellow councillors during a full council meeting on Wednesday over the local authority’s failure to provide basic services to residents.

Ward 14 Councillor Denford Ngadziore said council had failed to address various challenges, including garbage collection.

“Your Worship, we have no refuse trucks in my ward and garbage has since been piling,” he said.

“Residents have not been receiving potable water for some time now yet they are billed for all that.

“How do you expect one to continue paying bills when they are not receiving potable water? Where is the money going and who is accountable?” added Ngadziore.

Ward 8 Cllr Keith Charumbira said council should at the very least provide clean water to residents.

“Telling us that you have increased water treatment capacity while residents of Highlands are going for days without water doesn’t mean anything.”

Cllr Mafume told the meeting that Harare was struggling to procure water treatment chemicals.
