Portuguese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Rui Gonçalves Monteiro, yesterday met Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira, where they discussed ways of strengthening bilateral ties in various fields.
Yesterday’s meeting in Harare was the first since Prof Murwira’s appointment to the Foreign Affairs and International Trade portfolio.
“It was the first contact and I’m very pleased to be received by the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“It’s just a matter of maintaining contact, keeping in touch and trying to improve our relations in different fields, because we have a good relationship, but we believe we can do more, so we try to identify some sectors,” Amb Monteiro said.
They ambassador said they also discussed the participation of Portuguese companies at the forthcoming Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo later this month.
“We also spoke about companies, namely the participation in the ZITF in Bulawayo later this month, as well as in other events, mainly in the field of economy and culture,” Amb Monteiro said.
“So those were the main issues that were discussed. It was, as I mentioned, a first contact to maintain, because after that, I will have some meetings with other representatives from Zimbabwe in different fields, trying to improve the relationship”.
The Portuguese Ambassador said he was impressed by the country’s beauty and the skill of its hardworking people.
“You have here a very nice country, a lot of opportunities, with a beautiful country with many opportunities and skilled people, including a lot of them who speak Portuguese,” he said.
Apart from improving economic ties, the Portuguese Ambassador said it was important that the two countries extend ties in the fields of sports and education.
He said he had met University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Mapfumo, to discuss areas of cooperation.
