Postal sector still vibrant: Zimpost

the economic challenges facing the country, the company continues to grow and adapt to the changing environment.
“Globally, mail business has evolved over the years and has remained quite fluid due to technological advancements and innovations,’ said the Zimpost public relations manager, Ms Marian Banda.

Changes that have been observed are that the structure of mail volumes has dramatically changed from being dominated by private and social mail to corporate and business mail.
Ms Banda said Zimpost’s current mail ratios are 80 percent business to consumers and 20 percent consumer to consumer.
She added that corporate mail is driven by postage of statements from utility companies, department stores, banks, insurance companies and Government departments to individual consumers and other corporates.

Zimpost commercialised in 2000 to address its customers’ diverse changing communication needs by adapting to new communication methods while maintaining its traditional business.
“We have adapted and deployed technology to deliver value added communication services to our customers.
“Zimpost now fully intergrates new technology in affording and facilitating communication by housing phone shops, Internet cafes and sale of airtime recharge cards across networks,” Ms Banda said.

In 2000 Zimpost was registered in terms of the Companies Act, following the unbundling of the Posts and Telecommunications Corporation through the enactment of the Postal and Telecommunications Act, and the company was set to operate on a commercial basis.

While there were doubts about the company’s future due to obvious mail decline, this never happened due to the company’s decision to diversify its product portfolio, sweat its assets and lease out all the excess space created mostly by the unbundling of PTC.

Over the years excess space at post offices has been leased out in a manner that attracts customers to the post office building while also earning revenue for the company. Zimpost also offers agency services to a number of organisations using its wide postal network to give convenience to the organisation’s services and bill payments. Some of the companies currently utilising Zimpost’s agency services include Zimbabwe

National Road Administration, Zesa Holdings and Zimbabwe Broadcasting Holdings .
Zimpost has an extensive network of over 300 outlets countrywide.
