He said traditionally every year from mid-June to November, there is usually a significant jump in the demand for poultry feed.
“Most of our customers have day-old chicks which do not have feed hence if the situation does not improve, they will suffer losses.
“Some of our customers have resorted to feeding their chicks with pig feeds which reduce the quality of the chickens.”
A poultry producer, Mr Norman Ndlovu, said they were likely to lose business brought about by the festive season.
“We are not happy with the situation since we wanted to maximise sales during the festive season. The Government should assist farmers through ensuring that raw materials are available to manufacture poultry feed,” said Mr Ndlovu.
Contacted for comment, the administrator for the Zimbabwe Poultry Association, Mrs Sharon Bessa, said the poultry industry has been facing challenges.
“There is a distribution problem of poultry feed from manufacturing companies,” said Mrs Bessa.
Efforts to get comments from the manufacturing companies proved fruitless as they did not respond to emailed questions.
