FREQUENT power cuts dampened the mood of theatre enthusiasts at Amakhosi Cultural Centre in Bulawayo during the second day of the ongoing Inxusa Festival. The day, which began on a high note with a number of activities lined up, was later disrupted by the frequent power outages after the premiere of the play Uproot the Rot during the evening session of the festival.
The play Proposition was disrupted countless times as lights went off during the early stages of the play forcing the actors to rewind and start the play all over again.
This however, led to a significant number of theatre lovers leaving the auditorium. Earlier before the glitches, the prime time viewing had begun with the premiere of Uproot the Rot – a community piece that tackles the effects of corruption in today’s society.
The play, directed by Cont Mhlanga, kept the audience on the edge of their seats, as it was both a musical and a satirical play that traced the roots of corruption – from the village to the highest offices showing how this had affected service delivery in the country.
Apart from the artistes and theatre students from participating universities, it is evident that there is still a gap to be filled in terms of drawing ordinary people to watch productions.
The Inxusa Festival continues today with more programmes lined up.
