‘Power FM now pathetic’

business and the other week I was at Chibondo, yes, you heard me correctly. I was in Mount Darwin and when I came back I couldn’t make it on time.
However, readers of this column must have been wondering what could have happened to me since my last episode, well, all I can is I ain’t going nowhere.

The other day I was listening to one of Extra Large’s songs and it mentions something about “Kuda zvinhu kunge paper bag”. Well, according to street lingo, the line simply means craving for anything and everything. So some two weeks back, I was at the airport to welcome Wendall Parson and Vimbai Mutinhiri, the two Big Brother Amplified housemates and coincidentally, I met Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo in the VIP lounge. And most ZBCTV viewers are familiar with Pastor Ashimolowo since his gospel programmes airs on the station every Sunday morning.
Boy oh boy, I was expecting a pastor surrounded by bodyguards, bling bling and all that razzmatazz but here was a simple man, really down-to-earth guy who took his time to greet and chart with people at the airport. You wouldn’t think he is on the Forbes list of Africa’s top earning preachers.

But as I compared Pastor Ashimolowo to our own pastors, prophets, apostles or whatever, I could not help but conclude that “vanoda zvinhu” and this is why they now drive around in convoys and surround themselves with bouncers.
The gap between followers and the so-called men of God is by far widening with each sermon. But again, I would ask what’s the point when you can’t have time to speak to your own pastor, apostle or worse still your prophet. Quite honestly, I believe it’s the people who should be blamed because we are also caught up in this circle of “kuda zvinhu kunge paper bag.”

Believe me, there are lots of people who want to express themselves through this column and usually I tend to digress because I feel I should give them a voice.
I got this email from one reader – Tafadzwa Chiduku who alleges that Power FM is now pathetic. He also suggests that some Djs should now leave the station and give way to younger and more vibrant presenters. Below are Chiduku’s edited arguments:

I am writing this with a heavy heart and very irritated ears, I have listened to radio for the past 20 something years of my life and I must say, Power FM seems to be getting worse and worse as the years go by. What on earth is going on? Am I the only one who thinks the Djs on Power FM are pathetic?

That radio station is meant to be a youthful station, with up to date music, celeb news, interactive discussions, etc… but the more I listen, the more it hits me that the Dj’s most of the times do not know what the hell they are talking about.

Their celeb news gets to us late! I mean seriously, by the time the Djs gives us celeb gossip, we would have known for days or even weeks.
I understand Power Fm is meant to be a youthful station but I would ask why we have old guys the likes of Kudzi Marudza, Scott Matengambiri, Bridget Gavanga and the rest of those ancient voices?

Let’s be honest here, what on earth would they know about what’s hot right now?
I can bet you the guys I mentioned are either in their 40s and I mentioned those names because at one point they were worth listening to but now, I think it’s time to give it up! Then we go to the rest of the Djs who are some of the worst voices I have ever heard in my life.

You have to grasp the concept of radio, If you are playing love songs late at night, then you should sound mellow, relaxed and sexy, NOT Tinashe Chikuse! There is nothing sexy about that guy’s voice! And if it is 11:30am, you should be playing house just to keep people going, but not Power FM, They once had Davis Mugadza at around 11am playing love songs.
Then you move on to drive time! Now drive time is when almost everyone is tuned in on their way home.

That’s the time the DJs should tell us everything there is to know in the world of entertainment, current affairs, hot topics and call ins.
Not Power FM, they have Marudza on that slot and the guy sounds tired and old. I understand that these guys have nothing else to do besides radio that’s why they would rather die on the airwaves but as listeners we want up to standard entertainment or else we won’t pay for these radio licenses that they always harass us about… I think the DJs should be between the ages 21 to 29 for Power

FM and whoever is older should move to SFM or just retire! Give it up guys; you are all just sounding pathetic and it’s time for you to leave!
