Power supply to remain stable

ENERGY and Power Development Minister, Soda Zhemu, has refuted rumours of potential load shedding in the country.

There have been reports that the country’s electricity supply could be at risk.

But, Minister Zhemu maintained that the recent revisions in water allocation at Kariba Dam will not affect projections for energy generation.

Noting Zimbabwe’s plans for renewable energy, with a target of 2100MW by 2030, Zhemu added that around 150MW of renewables are already being generated.

“Probably, you might have come across some prophets of doom saying that after August there is going to be massive load shedding.

“That is not true, and we are not part of that.

“One thing that we know is that there have been some revisions in the water allocation and whatever ZESA is utilising for the purposes of generating electricity from Kariba Dam is within what we have planned and projected.

“We do not subscribe to the article that says after August there will be load shedding, that is not correct.”

He said from the 2100MW envisaged from renewables by 2030, the Government was targeting 1100MW of that by 2025.

“We have more than 90 licenced investments and the majority are in renewables, and we have put in place the policy frameworks.

“We have around 150MW of renewables being generated and 22 projects have been completed and are feeding into the national grid.”
