The 2025 Bulawayo Shutdown Ubuntu concert, held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Exhibition Centre on Saturday, delivered exactly what Bulawayo had hoped for, a powerful, celebratory close to a memorable year.

Days before the show, excitement was already thick in the air, with music lovers from all corners of the city and beyond counting down to what has become one of Bulawayo’s most anticipated annual gatherings. By the time gates opened, the venue was alive with energy and expectation.

This year’s edition was held under the theme Ubuntu, a concept rooted in community, togetherness and shared humanity. That spirit was evident throughout the night, reflected in the way artistes celebrated their fans and the way the crowd, in turn, lifted performers with support. The message was clear: we are who we are because of one another.

Over the years, the Bulawayo Shutdown has grown beyond being just a concert. While it initially leaned heavily on house and party vibes, it has evolved into a cultural moment that places Zimbabwean talent at the centre, while still standing shoulder to shoulder with national and regional stars. The night opened with Prince Eskhosini behind the decks, easing the crowd into the festivities with a smooth, measured DJ set. His selection created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, setting the pace for what was to follow and reminding revellers that great concerts are built gradually.

Great Stars Ijongosi followed with a short but commanding live performance, filling the venue with powerful vocals that drew loud applause from the audience. Their confident stage presence hinted at a group destined for bigger platforms.

Bhila then took to the stage, immediately igniting sing-alongs with his well-loved hit Emaweni. Confident and engaging, he made sure every fan felt part of the experience. Midway through his set, he excited the crowd by hinting at a new release expected early in the new year, drawing loud cheers of approval.

Bulawayo’s hip-hop queen, Noluntu J, brought a surge of energy with a performance that reaffirmed her place as one of the city’s finest. Her sharp flow and commanding stage presence had the crowd fully engaged.

DJ Eugy kept the momentum alive with crowd-pleasing selections between live acts, ensuring there was never a lull in energy.

Insimbi ZeZhwane electrified the crowd with a high-energy performance of their popular songs, drawing enthusiastic sing-alongs and dance from fans who clearly knew every word.

Rising star Ngwere Diki followed with a heartfelt and energetic set. Having first caught national attention through a viral freestyle on a popular podcast, the young artiste showed why his name continues to grow. The crowd responded warmly, cheering and singing along in support of his journey.

Ma9nine kept the tempo high with his well-known tracks, while DJ Eugy once again ensured smooth transitions that sustained the night’s rhythm.

A powerful collaborative moment followed as Mzoe 7, Metty and KVG shared the stage. Fresh from winning Male Artiste of the Year at the Bulawayo Arts Awards, Mzoe 7 brought charm and confidence, while the trio’s chemistry kept the audience fully engaged. Their interaction with fans and high-energy delivery made their set one of the night’s highlights.

Beloved Bulawayo artiste Fab G Mshanakagogo then took centre stage, opening with classic fan favourites before transitioning to the city’s anthem, Imali Yesgweja. Accompanied by dancers dressed in full mining regalia, the performance stood out both musically and visually.

Hulungende followed with a standout performance, opening with his hit High featuring Imvi. Joined on stage by his wife, Malloti, as a backing vocalist, his set carried a personal and emotional touch that resonated strongly with the crowd.

Chillmaster offered a softer moment, drawing the audience into a sing-along atmosphere that allowed revellers to catch their breath while remaining fully immersed in the music.

DJ Kezzy Am then delivered a dynamic set that many fans rated among the best of the night, heightening anticipation for the international acts to follow.

South African star Young Stunna’s delayed entrance initially drew frustration from the crowd, but the mood shifted instantly once he took the microphone. He delivered an explosive performance, including songs Imithandazo, Adiwele and Sengizwile, sweating heavily within minutes as he poured energy into every song.

He was followed by another South African heavyweight, KO, performing in Zimbabwe for the first time. Despite a brief technical hiccup, KO went on to deliver hit after hit, including Sete, Caracara, Skhanda Love, One Time and Supa Dupa. Addressing the crowd, he praised their energy and wished Bulawayo a prosperous New Year, urging fans to put God first in all they do.

In the early hours of the morning, the show reached its peak as Merciless warmed up the crowd before introducing the man of the moment, Winky D. The venue erupted as the Zimbabwean icon took to the stage, delivering a relentless two-hour set packed with hits. At 3.50am, when he asked the crowd what should happen next, the resounding response was a plea for more — showing his enduring connection with fans.
