THE long arm of the law struck gold, literally, when alert detectives pounced on a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser that was about to sneak 15,7 kilogrammes of the precious mineral out of Zimbabwe.
Police confirmed that they received a hot tip-off on 19 August 2025 that the vehicle was being used to smuggle gold out of the country. Swift action by detectives from the CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit led to a high-stakes chase and the dramatic arrest of three suspects.
Inside the luxury 4×4, officers uncovered the glittering stash of gold worth a staggering US$1 568 860,00. The seized treasure has since been surrendered to Fidelity Gold Refinery in Msasa.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations are now in full swing to establish the full network behind the daring smuggling attempt.
The bust is the latest in a series of bold crackdowns as authorities tighten the leash on mineral smugglers bleeding the country of its wealth.
