HORROR in Hope Fountain!
A security guard at Lonestar Mine has sparked national outrage after allegedly turning a peaceful mining village into a scene straight out of a nightmare.
Lloyd Mutsengi (50) employed by Lonestar Mine, tucked in Hope Fountain, Matabeleland South Province shot a woman in the face, leading to her death after she refused to let him rape her at gunpoint.
He tried to rape her companion, but failed to penetrate after the woman asked him to let her pray before he could defile her.
The incident, which reads like the script of a horror movie, unfolded on 13 April 2025.
Witnesses shivered and some had goose bumps popping out on their skin as they recounted the night of horror to a B-Metro news crew.
A heavily intoxicated, lanky Mutsengi arrived for work on 12 April, but his boss sent him back home as he could hardly stand on his feet.
“He unholstered his service gun and fired some shots into the air, claiming he had spotted a person getting into the mine to steal gold. It spooked other workers. An investigation showed that the intruder was a figment of his imagination,” narrated his superior Joshua Ndlovu, who appeared to be still in shock.
He said they had to disarm Mutsengi because he appeared to be a danger to himself and others.
On the following night, he showed up, sloshed to the gills again, and another supervisor, Jabulani Nyoni, sent him back home once more.
“Mutsengi returned to his room, but later in the night, he woke up and stole a gun. He shouted that he wanted to kill Nyoni. He dashed to the site where Nyoni was stationed but failed to locate him,” he narrated.
Bent on his evil mission, Mutsengi found illegal miners at a nearby site and forcefully took their gold.
“When he got to the mine, he fired shots and ordered everyone to lie on the ground and took their gold and vanished from the scene,” said Ndlovu.
A short distance away, he met Samantha Gama of Entunja Village in Matopo and her friend (named protected for ethical reasons) of Gulati Village in Matopo.
He brandished the gun in their faces and told them to strip so he could have sex with them.
Samantha was defiant and begged Mutsengi to let them go.
He was having none of it.
Mutsengi shot her point blank in the face, and she died on the spot.
He ordered the other woman to strip and lie on the ground.
“The terrified woman beseeched him to let her pray before he raped her,” said Ndlovu.
After a short prayer, the snarling Mutsengi ordered her to lie on the ground.
Naked and afraid, she complied.
“However, for some reason, he failed to penetrate her,” said Ndlovu.
Mutsengi is said to have forced the woman to play with his manhood, but it stubbornly refused to rise to the occasion.
Deflated and seemingly embarrassed, Ndlovu added, Mutsengi slunk away into the night.
Police have since instigated a manhunt for him and he remains at large.
A security guard who requested not to be named said that after the incident, the traumatised survivor screamed her lungs out for help.
“People rushed to the scene. The grisly sight affected everyone. They transported her and the deceased to the hospital,” said the security guard, who still appeared shaken.
Ncube described Mutsengi as a quiet and reserved man who liked his liquor.
“I’m really shocked what got into his mind because he was a sociable man who did not like to be involved in arguments. He used to talk about his family that he left in Gutu, “said Ncube.
B-Metro learnt that Samantha was buried yesterday in Entunja Village in Matopo.
Bulawayo acting Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Ndebele confirmed the incident.
“We urge members of the public to respect human life. We also advise members of the public, especially those who use firearms not to use it to commit crimes,” said Asst Insp Msebele.
