Chitungwiza Town Council has teamed up with a local company on a pilot project to install pre-paid water meters in 3 000 houses with plans to adopt the system to cover the whole town. Town Clerk Mr George Makunde yesterday met with officials from Zimit and their Chinese partners to finalise the deal.
While Mr Makunde would not comment over the issue yesterday, Zimit systems administrator Mr Tapiwanashe Kache said their company engaged Chinese experts to help solve water management problems faced by most councils.
“The project is targeting all councils but we have made Chitungwiza our first port of call. Three experts from Holley meters which is in the business of manufacturing water meters, electricity meters, among other meters are in the country to ascertain the type of meters which go along with our weather.
“We will be installing smart meters which process data and communicate with other gadgets. The pilot project will begin next month (December). From our survey we have realised that most houses in Chitungwiza do not have meters or the meters they have are not working,” he said.
He said Zimit intends to extend the programme to other cities and towns as pre-paid meters enable consumers to pay for what they would have used.
Mr Kache said although most houses in Chitungwiza were not receiving water there was need to account for the available water and come up with solutions to augment water supplies. He said their Chinese partners supplied Zesa with pre-paid meters for electricity.
