The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has summoned Yadah FC and their official, Spencer Muvadi, to appear before its Disciplinary Committee following the alleged assault of goalkeeper Godknows Gurure after a league match against Ngezi Platinum Stars on August 22 at Heart Stadium.

In a statement, the PSL confirmed that Yadah and Muvadi face charges of assault and violent conduct. The club is accused of allowing officials and sponsors to engage in violent behaviour towards Gurure, while Muvadi faces additional charges of invading the dressing room and physically attacking the player.

“The disciplinary hearings will take place at the PSL offices on Thursday 11 September 2025 at 1730hrs,” said PSL Communications Officer Kudzai Bare.

The incident sparked outrage across Zimbabwean football. The Footballers union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) described the assault as a “cowardly act of violence” and demanded urgent action to protect players.

“No footballer should ever be subjected to physical or verbal abuse by club officials under any circumstances,” FUZ said in its statement. “This assault is not only an attack on Godknows Gurure, but also on player rights and the values of the sport. We demand swift and decisive action to ensure such disgraceful conduct has no place in Zimbabwean football.”

FUZ also urged PSL and ZIFA to enforce stronger measures to guarantee players’ safety in dressing rooms and stadium environments.

The Zimbabwe Goalkeepers Association (ZGA) echoed the condemnation, calling the attack “barbaric” and confirming that Gurure required hospital treatment for head injuries sustained in the incident.

“Football is a team sport and it is fundamentally wrong to punish or physically assault players for the outcome of a match,” said ZGA secretary Ndodana Sibanda. “Such behaviour undermines the principles of sportsmanship, safety, and teamwork that football embodies.”

Yadah have since issued a statement distancing the club from the incident, insisting that Muvadi acted in his personal capacity and not on behalf of the team.

With the PSL disciplinary hearing set for next week, all eyes will be on whether the league takes the strong action demanded by players’ bodies and stakeholders who insist the “beautiful game” must remain a safe space for its participants.
