THE Premier Soccer League has released fixtures for the next three match days as it moves to ease pressure on a congested 2026 calendar and avoid an excessive number of midweek matches later in the season.
The programme covers Match Days 16, 17 and 18, with action running from June 5 to June 14 during a period that would ordinarily coincide with the FIFA international window.
CAPS United, defending champions Scottland, Ngezi Platinum Stars and fellow title hopefuls Hardrock all face potentially decisive fixtures as the championship race gathers momentum.
Among the stand-out matches are FC Platinum’s clash against Ngezi Platinum Stars at Mandava Stadium on June 13, Scottland’s meeting with Hardrock at the National Sports Stadium on June 14 and the Bulawayo derby between Highlanders and Bulawayo Chiefs on the same day.
PSL chief executive officer Rodwell Thabe said the decision to continue with league action during the international window was agreed upon by clubs at the league’s Annual General Meeting.
“We reached an agreement with the clubs during the AGM that we are facing a congested calendar and we cannot afford the luxury of going on a lengthy break because it would mean we would have to play a large number of mid-week matches,” said Thabe.
He noted that Zimbabwean football continues to face challenges associated with week day fixtures as most stadiums are not equipped to host night matches.
Unlike Europe, where supporters can attend games after work under floodlights, local clubs often suffer reduced gate takings when matches are played during the week.
“As it is already, without breaking and continuing with the current schedule we have, it means during the entire season we will probably have about eight or so midweek games.
“So we felt that if we take advantage of the opportunity not to break, even during the mid-season period, then we would ease the number of midweek matches that we have in the country,” said Thabe.
The league also considered uncertainty surrounding upcoming regional and continental commitments.
