Zanu PF Women’s League: Driving women’s empowerment & party mobilisation
The Zanu PF Women’s League, the female wing of Zimbabwe’s ruling party, plays a pivotal role in political mobilisation, economic empowerment and gender advocacy.
Established in 1977, it has evolved into a major force within both the party and Zimbabwean society.
Political mobilisation & party backbone
President Mnangagwa highlights the League as “the backbone of our party’s mobilisation machinery” and “nerve centre of our mass Party,” urging members to recruit, educate and galvanise both women and youth into Zanu PF.
The League regularly hosts national assemblies and district conferences, ensuring grassroots engagement and adherence to the party’s constitution and ideology.
Empowerment & economic development
Under Zanu PF National Secretary for the Women’s League Mabel Chinomona and national leadership, the League has implemented numerous initiatives: distributing over 1.2 million chickens, training in detergent-making, tailoring, baking, floriculture, beekeeping and operating poultry and solar incubator projects with capacity for 36,000 eggs.
A US$50,000 revolving fund in Bulawayo and provincial training programs in Hwange have deepened support for female entrepreneurs, particularly in SMEs.
Partnerships with church groups have placed skills and income-generating projects, such as soap-making and bakery, in rural communities aligned with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.
Advocacy for gender equality & societal upliftment
The League’s 2022 national conference emphasised “Total Political, Social and Economic Empowerment for every woman by 2030,” aligning closely with national development strategy NDS1 and Vision 2030 goals.
It champions women’s inclusion in leadership and decision making, with growing appointments in parliament, provincial bodies, and alongside female ministers to integrate empowerment policies.

Zanu PF asserts that equipping women with entrepreneurial skills, access to loans (via the Women’s Bank), land and technical expertise mirrors international frameworks like Agenda 2063 and UN SDGs, seen as essential for inclusive national growth.
The League actively contributes to climate-smart agriculture programs (e.g., Pfumvudza/Intwasa) and rural enterprise, aligning women-led projects with national economic resilience.

First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa arrives for Zanu PF Women’s League National Assembly
First Lady and Zanu PF Politburo member Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has arrived at the Zanu PF Headquarters in Harare for the much-anticipated Women’s League National Assembly set to take place this afternoon.
Among the top officials already at the venue are the Secretary for Women’s Affairs, Cde Mabel Chinomona, and Minister of Women Affairs, Community and SME Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa.
Their presence signals the importance of the assembly in shaping the party’s women’s agenda ahead of future national development and political strategies.
Delegates and members of the Women’s League continue to arrive steadily, with many already seated in the main auditorium, awaiting the official start of proceedings.
President Mnangagwa, who is also the First Secretary of Zanu PF, is expected to preside over the event and deliver a keynote address.

Presidential Advisor Mr Paul Tungwarara donates hampers to Zanu PF Women’s League Members
Presidential Advisor Mr Paul Tungwarara has donated food hampers and various items to members of the Zanu PF Women’s League, in a gesture of support that was warmly received during the Women’s League National Assembly held at the party’s headquarters in Harare today.
Zanu PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs, Cde Mabel Chinomona, praised Mr Tungwarara for his continued generosity and commitment to uplifting women within the party.
“He is a man who is supporting us a lot in our programmes,” she said.
“We are grateful, Mr Tungwarara. May you continue with your generous heart.”
Cde Chinomona announced that every woman in attendance had received a hamper, thanks to Mr Tungwarara’s donation.
The gifts come at a time when the Women’s League is intensifying its activities in voter mobilisation and grassroots engagement.
The donation underscores Mr Tungwarara’s growing role in supporting Zanu PF’s structures and social programmes, particularly those that empower women at the grassroots level.
Zanu PF Provincial Chairladies endorse resolution for President to stay in office beyond 2028
Zanu PF Women’s League Provincial Chairladies have reaffirmed their support for the resolution that President Mnangagwa should remain in office beyond 2028, saying the leader’s vision and leadership remain critical to Zimbabwe’s continued development.
The endorsement was announced by Zanu PF Women’s League Secretary for Administration, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, during the party’s Women League National Assembly.

“All Chairladies are moving with the resolution made in Bulawayo for the President to stay in office beyond 2028,” Cde Mutsvangwa said.
She said the women were not only pledging their political loyalty but were also leading from the front in party mobilisation, with a particular focus on young voters.
“Our women are taking the lead in cell verification and voter mobilisation efforts. We are also keen to modernise the party and make it more attractive to young people,” she added.
Senator Mutsvangwa also called for greater institutional support to ensure women in the party are empowered to carry out their work effectively.
She paid tribute to the Women’s League Secretary, Cde Mabel Chinomona, for her tireless leadership and ability to represent the interests of all Zimbabwean women.
“As women, you gave us a woman to lead all women,” she said.
“The woman who is leading understands the needs of all women in Zimbabwe, even outside Zanu PF. This woman is hardworking despite the many responsibilities that she has. This is none other than Secretary for Women’s Affairs, Cde Mabel Chinomona,” said Cde Mutsvangwa.
The Women’s League continues to be a critical pillar in Zanu PF’s grassroots mobilisation and party structures ahead of future elections.

“Women should take part in the development of the country. We are supporting Government programmes so that they realise their full potential”she said.
Cde Chinomona applauded the President for the work done on Trabablas Interchange, Mbare Musika new market and the Geo Pomona plant.
Cde Chinomona also commended President Mnangagwa for coming up with empowerment projects for women.
She also thanked President Mnangagwa for his recent visits to Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe Hospitals.
Cde Chinomona said the Women’s League is in full support of President Mnangagwa’s leadership.
President Mnangagwa salutes Women’s League
President Mnangagwa has said the Zanu PF Women’s League is the backbone of the ruling party due to its grassroots mobilisation efforts.
Addressing the Women’s League National Assembly at the Zanu PF Headquarters in Harare this afternoon, the President said the strength and growth of the party are firmly anchored in the commitment and resilience of women.
“The strength of the party is anchored in the Women’s League. We will ensure that the Women’s League is supported and remains strong,” he said.
In recognition of the Women’s League’s grassroots mobilisation efforts, President Mnangagwa announced a reward scheme for the most active provincial structures.
The top-performing province will receive a motor vehicle, while the second and third prizes will be US$10 000 and US$5 000 respectively.
“The Women’s League has always stood by the party, and we must recognise their tireless work,” the President said, warning against internal discord. “We don’t want divisions in the party.”
He also saluted Zimbabwean women for their patriotism and commitment to national development.
“I salute the women of this great nation for their kind hearts and love for this country,” he said. “When women are empowered, communities are empowered.”
He highlighted his satisfaction with the performance of women he has appointed to leadership roles.
“As the President, l have not been disappointed with the women I have uplifted into leadership positions,” he noted, adding that the party is pushing for more gender-sensitive legislation.
The Women’s League National Assembly brought together delegates from across the country, reinforcing the League’s role in driving party programmes and national development.
