PRESIDENT Banana yesterday set an example for all citizens by registering for a national identity card and as a voter in Borrowdale.
But the voters’ registration exercise is moving “very slowly” because politicians have not informed the people of the importance of the exercise, the Registrar-General Cde James Chigwedere, said yesterday.
Speaking shortly after President Banana registered, Cde Chigwedere said: “There has been very little, if any pressure exerted on the people and it appears that very few people were aware of the exercise,” he said.
However, he said, investigations carried out by his office showed that more people in the rural areas were coming forward to register than those in urban areas.
“There are even some civil servants who are not aware they should register,” he said. – Herald Reporter, Ziana.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
It is critical that all Zimbabweans who are eligible to vote, register with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission so that they exercise their right. It was for one man/woman vote that the liberation struggle was fought.
During the last by-election few people in some parts of the country like Matabeleland North responded to the voter registration blitz by ZEC.
ZEC needs to be very proactive when carrying out its voter registration blitz, as well as being creative in luring the youths especially those in the urban areas to register to vote.
Politicians also have a huge role to play in mobilising people to register to vote and to actually vote on polling days.
