President Mnangagwa launched the New Glovers Solar Plant in Kwekwe today.
In his address, the President said the construction of the solar power plant aligns with the country’s national goals and the broader green energy revolution.
“Tiri musangano nehurumende inozadzisa zvivimbiso kune ruzhinji ichiita mabasa anoonekwa nemeso,” he said.
President Mnangagwa said the country should build resilience against climate change and its associated energy challenges.
He said the Second Republic has zero tolerance for the sabotage of the country’s economic projects.
The solar plant commissioned today has a capacity of 10 megawatts and is expected to generate approximately 20 GWh annually.
This is the first phase of a build-up towards a total capacity of 110 megawatts once the project is complete.
The plant has 18 600 solar panels, and is supported by 31 inverters, two smart transformers and a 6-kilometre transmission line connecting seamlessly to the national grid.
This will significantly reduce reliance on energy imports, conserve foreign currency and promote energy independence.
