Cde Chavez, who was one of Latin America’s most charismatic and influential leaders, died last Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.
The 58-year-old had undergone four operations in Cuba for a cancer that was first detected in his pelvic region in mid-2011. His last surgery was on December 11 and he had not been seen in public since.
Latin American leaders and US pumped their fists in support of a crowd of cheering Hugo Chavez loyalists as they arrived on Monday for the leftist leader’s state funeral before the nation swore in an acting president, Vice President Nicolas Maduro who would call for elections, which are expected to be convened within 30 days.
Venezuela has given a lavish farewell to the leftist firebrand, with hundreds of thousands of people filing past his open casket non-stop since last Wednesday to say goodbye to the man who was worshipped by the oil-rich nation’s poor.
His body would lie in state for seven more days and officials said his body would be embalmed and preserved “like Lenin” to rest in a glass casket in the military barracks where he plotted a failed coup in 1992.
Chavez easily won a new six-year term at an election in October and his death devastated millions of supporters who adored his charismatic style, anti-US rhetoric and oil-financed policies that brought subsidised food and free health clinics to long-neglected slums.
