PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday extended warm congratulations to his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan, following her election as president of the East African country.

On Saturday, Tanzania’s Independent National Electoral Commission announced that incumbent President Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party had won the presidential election, securing 97,66 percent of the vote.

She is expected to be sworn in today.

President Hassan becomes the country’s first elected female president. She previously served as Vice President from 2015 to 2021 and first assumed the Presidency in March 2021 following the death of then-President John Magufuli, marking a historic milestone as Tanzania’s first female head of state.

In his congratulatory message yesterday, President Mnangagwa said the outcome of the polls reflected the trust and confidence that the Tanzanian people continue to place in their leader and in the long-standing policies of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Zimbabwe, the ruling party, Zanu-PF and indeed, on my own behalf, I wish to extend my sincere congratulations on your victory in the just concluded presidential elections. Your victory testifies to the trust and confidence that the people of the United Republic of Tanzania have in your visionary leadership and in the policies of the party you lead Chama Cha Mapinduzi,” he said.

The President also reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to strengthening relations with Tanzania, highlighting the deep historical ties and shared values between Harare and Dodoma.

“I would like to reaffirm my commitment to work closely with you, Your Excellency, to further strengthen and deepen the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between our two countries and peoples,” he said.

President Mnangagwa added that Zimbabwe looked forward to continued collaboration with Tanzania at regional, continental and global platforms on matters of mutual interest.

“I look forward to continuing to work with you at the regional, continental and multilateral fora on issues of mutual interest and concern,” he said

President Mnangagwa also conveyed his personal good wishes to his Tanzanian counterpart, expressing hope that her tenure would bring greater prosperity to the East African nation.

“Let us take this opportunity to wish you, Your Excellency, good health and success in leading your great country to prosperity. Please accept, Your Excellency and Dear Sister, the assurances of my highest consideration,” he said.

In her victory speech over the weekend, President Hassan said her overwhelming victory was a sign that voters had given Chama Cha Mapinduzi the green light to implement its election promises.

She called on Tanzanians to stand together for national development.

“The 2025 election is now done. It is now time to stand together as a nation,” she said, and praised the electoral body for conducting a “free, open and fair” election.

President Hassan condemned some unruly elements who caused violence in the country even before the results were announced, and described them as “uncouth”.

“What happened in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza and Songwe was neither civil nor patriotic,” she said.

“A patriot builds the country, not to tear down what was built by the energy and the sweat of the citizens.

“The government utterly condemns those happenings. On the issue of the county’s safety and the United Republic of Tanzania, there is no alternative but to use all the security tactics to remain with a safe country.”

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also sent a warm congratulatory message to President Hassan following her victory.
