PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has conferred a Liberation Hero status to the late Bulawayo gynaecologist and obstetrician, Dr Taurai Gunguwo, who succumbed to kidney failure on Sunday.
He will be buried today at the Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo.
“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Cde Mnangagwa, has conferred a Liberation Hero status to the late Cde Dr Taurai Gunguwo who died on 5 April 2026. He will be buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo,” said Zanu PF Secretary General Advocate Jacob Mudenda.
Dr Taurai Gunguwo’s death plunged the medical fraternity across the country into mourning.
Dr Gunguwo’s life’s work accompanied thousands of families through moments of immense vulnerability, hope and new beginnings.
His passing has left a heavy stillness across consulting rooms, delivery wards and homes where his name carried reassurance.
Colleagues described Dr Gunguwo as far more than a specialist, saying he was a mentor who shaped generations of medical professionals, guided young doctors through the demanding and delicate world of pregnancy and childbirth with patience and rigour.
His body lay in State at his home at Number 36 Burnside Road in Bulawayo last night ahead of the burial today at cemetery reserved for the city’s luminaries that include sports icons, musicians, and businesspeople among others who contributed to the development of Bulawayo and the greater Matabeleland region.
