SADC Chairman, President Mnangagwa, has left for Maputo, Mozambique, to attend the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

He will join other Heads of State and Government from the SADC region.

The President was seen off at Robert Mugabe International Airport by Vice Presidents Dr Constantino Chiwenga and Cde Kembo Mohadi, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, State Security Minister Lovemore Matuke, and Service Chiefs, among other dignitaries.

He is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, and Deputy Chief Secretary, Mr George Charamba, among others.

Meanwhile, VP Mohadi is the Acting President.

Mozambique’s golden jubilee celebrations will be held at Machava Stadium, the same place where the country’s founding President Samora Machel proclaimed the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975.

At least 40 000 people are expected to attend the commemorations.

Mozambique looked after Zimbabwe’s freedom fighters and provided them with invaluable support as they fought the colonial regime led by Ian Smith.
