HARARE, Zimbabwe – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed deep sorrow over renowned Historian and Educationist Pathisa Nyathi’s death, which he described as a great loss to the nation.
Nyathi passed away on Saturday, November 4th, 2024.
He was a veteran educationist who specialised in teaching Science and Mathematics, and had played a key role in documenting Zimbabwe’s history and culture.
In a condolence message, The President noted that earlier this year, he had tasked Nyathi and Reverend Paul Damasane to document the heroic Pupu Battle of National Resistance against British colonial encroachment, as well as trace the final journey of the late King Lobengula following the fall of the Ndebele Kingdom in 1893.
Nyathi was known for his intellectual versatility and breadth, having blazed a new trail as a historian even late in his teaching career. He leaves behind numerous path-breaking publications on Zimbabwe’s past, including genealogies of communities and biographies of several national icons, such as Lozikevi, the last Queen of Khumalo.
The President expressed profound grief over this “very sad and untimely demise” which, he said, had “robbed our Nation so irreparably.” He said the nation will deeply miss Cde Nyathi’s immense contributions to the reconstruction and preservation of Zimbabwe’s national heritage.
