PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has sent a message of condolence to his Zambian counterpart, President Edgar Lungu and the people of the neighbouring country following the death of one of the country’s revered freedom fighters and statesman, Mr Alexander Grey Zulu.

Mr Zulu (93) passed away on Sunday last week at his home in Lusaka after he had been unwell for sometime. President Mnangagwa said he had hoped that Mr Zulu would recover but that turned out not being the case.

“The name of the late Grey Zulu is intrinsically linked to the history of liberation movements of Southern Africa, especially my own country Zimbabwe whose citizens and many a freedom fighter received tremendous moral and material support from the Government and great people of Zambia during the nascent days of our struggle for Independence and throughout the liberation period,” President Mnangagwa said in a statement.

He said Zimbabwe had a veritable strong ally and partner with the former United National Independence Party (UNIP) Secretary-General and Vice-President of the Republic of Zambia.

“Allow me Mr President and Dear Brother, on behalf of the ruling party Zanu-PF, the Government and people of Zimbabwe, my family and on my own behalf, to convey to you and through Your Excellency, to the Government and people of Zambia, in particular the Zulu family, my sincere condolences on the death of a great icon of Zambia and Southern Africa’s liberation story. We mourn his great loss together. May his soul rest in eternal peace.” — @NyembeziMu
