PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe yesterday said 2013 was a year of great fortunes for Zimbabwe in many respects following the national cricket team’s historic win over Pakistan at the weekend. Zimbabwe beat Pakistan by 24 runs in a match that ended at Harare Sports Club on Saturday, thanks to Tendai Chatara’s five wicket haul and overall team spirit from Andy Waller’s side.
President Mugabe, who is also the patron of Zimbabwe Cricket, said the year saw Zimbabwe beating Pakistan in cricket for their first win in 12 years against an established side.
“This year saw us beating South Africa (in and international football friendly match). It is also the first time we manage to beat Pakistan in a test match,” he said.
President Mugabe was speaking at the 2013 prize giving ceremony of the Presidential Medal Shooting Competition at Cleveland Range yesterday. Zimbabwe’s Test victory over Pakistan which left the sides level 1-1 in the two-match series, ensured that they finished the tour on a positive note after losing the Twenty20 and ODI series.
The President was also delighted by the Warriors performance in South Africa last week when they beat Bafana Bafana 2-1 at their own backyard. Recently the President appointed a stand-alone Sports, Arts and Culture Ministry headed by Andrew Langa.
