President to spell out legislative agenda

today when he officially opens the last session of the Seventh Parliament. This sitting would culminate in the dissolution of the House of Assembly next year to pave way for harmonised elections expected in March. Hundreds of people, who include ambassadors and captains of industry, would follow proceedings from the Speaker’s gallery while others would be at Parliament’s courtyard where a monitor would be installed.

The President’s procession would start from State House where the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces would be driven in a vintage Rolls Royce.
There would be a flypast by the Air Force of Zimbabwe that would be performed simultaneously with the singing of the national anthem.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku is expected to lead judges while the Chiefs’ Council president Chief Fortune Charumbira would lead traditional leaders into the Chamber.

Service chiefs would also make their procession into the House of Assembly.
Speaker of the House of Assembly Mr Lovemore Moyo is expected to lead members while Senate President Cde Ednah Madzongwe would lead Senators into the Chamber.

The President would deliver his key-note address where he would spell out the legislative agenda for the Session. This session is expected to discuss several Bills and motions.

Notable among the Bills would be the Constitutional Bill that seeks to give effect to the new Constitution.
The introduction of the Bill would, however, be subject to political parties in the Global Political Agreement agreeing to the Copac draft. Other Bills to be tabled include amendments to existing legislation to make them consistent with the new Constitution.

Some of the Acts to be amended include the Electoral Act, and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Act.
