The Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces said crime was spoiling activities and relations in the country.
“Crime, crime, crime. It’s spoiling the relations of families, social, business and other activities in our country. We just have to work hard in combating crime as we have done so to win these accolades you have shown us today (yesterday),” President Mugabe said.

He was speaking in Harare yesterday at a welcome reception for those who participated in the 2011 Southern African Regional Police Chief Co-operation Organisation (SARPCCO) games in Lubumbashi, DRC, recently.

ZRP won 55 medals, 19 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze, becoming the regional champions.
Nine countries – DRC, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Zambia, Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe battled for honours in athletics, soccer, netball, men and women’s volleyball, darts and chess.

President Mugabe said the 7th edition of the SARPCCO games buttressed regional co-operation among the region’s police forces.
“Through such interaction in sport, police organisations in the region not only cultivate close relations among themselves, but also develop a cross-fertilisation of ideas and devise strategies to handle transnational crimes,” he said.

President Mugabe said the police team exhibited a flawless and formidable performance and emerged winners.
“This team of disciplined, well-oiled, determined, typically solid Zimbabwe Police athletes did us proud in every discipline.
“This splendid performance made the athletes true ambassadors of the ZRP and of Zimbabwe as a whole

Commissioner-General of Police Augustine Chihuri said social interactions of this magnitude, provided a framework for co-operation, which further strengthened regional solidarity, peace and security.
He said it was gratifying that their regional grouping not only shared identical economic, social and political backgrounds, but also shared the history of struggle.
“The destiny of our countries and that of our people is thus inextricably bound together.

“SARPCCO as a regional police organisation therefore constitutes the umbilical cord that connects all countries of the region with the noble intention of creating a peaceful environment for our people, for our country and the region,” he said.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said although they were denigrated by their erstwhile colonisers, they had remained resolute and focused.
“In view of this, we continue to showcase our sporting prowess in the most humble and professional way,” he said. Police this year declared war on criminals and armed robbers and said they would track them down until there was sanity countrywide.
