Presidential borehole scheme spreads wings to Glen View

The Presidential Borehole Scheme, which started in Chitungwiza recently, moved to Glen View yesterday.

The scheme is in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision of providing clean water to all citizens, especially urban areas that have been run down by opposition parties since 2000.

President Mnangagwa launched the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme in Chitungwiza ahead of the March 26 by-elections, and promised to deliver clean water across the country.

Most urban areas, principally Harare, have erratic water supplies but then, the water is unsafe to drink, hence the coming of the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme.

Already, about 25 boreholes have been sunk in Chitungwiza, and the target of 40 boreholes will be reached soon.

Yesterday, the scheme was taken to Glen View where there is a target of 40 boreholes.

Director of communications for the scheme Ms Tendayi Sithole, said they were working towards attaining Vision 2030 and the fulfilment of the National Development Strategy 1.

“Our aim is to drill at least 40 solar-powered boreholes and this project will go on across all provinces in Zimbabwe,” she said.

Ms Sithole said they took heed of President Mnangagwa’s call for Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to come back and contribute to socio-economic development of the country.

The scheme’s chief executive officer, Mr Tempter Tungwarara, said they were targeting 350 boreholes countrywide.

Other constituencies to get boreholes in Harare are Highfield East in Ward 24, Highfield West in Ward 29, Kuwadzana 6, Kuwadzana 4 in the Paddocks area, Kambuzuma, Mufakose , Harare Central (Queensdale), Harare East (Chikurubi Maximum Prison and Support Unit), among others.

Mr Tungwarara said some of the boreholes will be connected directly to the houses for easy accessibility.

Under the borehole drilling scheme, Harare and Chitungwiza are expected to get over 200 solar-powered boreholes.
