IN a ground-breaking partnership, Discovery Ambulance Services and Concord for Young Women in Business Global have joined forces to launch a comprehensive, free Presidential medical outreach programme in Bulawayo.

The initiative aims to bring quality healthcare services closer to marginalised communities, promoting public health and combating infectious diseases

It is also aimed at bolstering public health and combat the spread of infectious diseases, including Mpox, a growing concern in the region, by providing essential health services such as free blood pressure check-ups, blood sugar screenings, and treatments.

The recent emergence of Mpox cases in Zimbabwe, with cases reported in Harare and Mberengwa, has underscored the need for proactive measures to safeguard citizens’ health.

In a statement, Discovery Ambulance Services chief executive officer, Mr David Munowenyu, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the President for the opportunity to launch “The Presidential Emergency Medical Scheme” in Bulawayo.

“This ground-breaking programme will provide critical health services, including training in first aid, blood pressure and diabetes checks, and transportation of patients to hospitals” said Mr Munowenyu.

The Presidential Emergency Medical Scheme aligns with the Government’s vision to enhance healthcare delivery and ensure universal access to essential medical services. By partnering with the Government, Discovery Ambulance Services aims to improve healthcare accessibility and quality, particularly in emergency medical services.

We will be conducting community outreach, providing health check-ups and tackling critical issues. Our first aid training, which will take place at Jairos Jiri, will be completely free of charge.”

Mr Munowenyu said they expect over 1 000 people to receive free treatment.

“Regarding the training, we will be conducting sessions from today until October 17. Upon completion, participants will receive certificates of completion signed by the President” said Mr Munowenyu.

He advised members of the public to participate, enabling them to acquire knowledge on treating citizens involved in accidents and exploring potential employment opportunities. Offering these critical health services, the initiative aims to promote early detection, prevention, and treatment of diseases, ultimately protecting the well-being of Bulawayo’s residents.

This outreach effort aligns perfectly with the Government’s commitment to providing universal access to basic healthcare, a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s health strategy.

The President’s dedication to combating infectious diseases that threaten public health is evident in this initiative. By providing vital medical services, the Government aims to protect its citizens from health risks and promote overall well-being.

This effort reflects the country’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), where everyone receives necessary healthcare without facing financial hardship .UHC encompasses a range of essential health services, from prevention to treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care.

By offering free health services, this outreach programme aligns perfectly with the government’s policy on healthcare accessibility, demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing current health challenges in Zimbabwe. This initiative showcases the Second Republic’s unwavering commitment to achieving national objectives, particularly in public health, and highlights the power of partnerships in delivering critical services at the grassroots level.

The programme’s focus on fighting diseases and promoting health equity reflects the administration’s dedication to fostering a healthier, more resilient Zimbabwe. This is evident in the government’s efforts to strengthen the health sector through initiatives like the Health Resilience Fund and Strategic Frameworks, aimed at bolstering Universal Health Coverage.
