BULAWAYO was a hive of activity yesterday as Zanu-PF supporters conducted peaceful marches across the city in preparation for President Mugabe’s star rally at White City Stadium today. President Mugabe, who is also the Zanu-PF First Secretary, will jet into the City of Kings this morning to address thousands of people ahead of Wednesday’s harmonised elections.
Zanu-PF provincial chairman Professor Callistus Ndlovu said the President’s visit was an important moment for Bulawayo before the holding of elections.
“For the past two weeks we have been making preparations for the President’s visit and everything is in place now. Tomorrow is an important day for Bulawayo.
“Like in other provinces this is the only rally that will be addressed by the Head of State in this election campaign,” said Prof Ndlovu.
“Today we have been conducting road shows in all constituencies in the city urging people to come in large numbers for the President’s rally.”
Bulawayo City Centre was painted green and yellow by mid-morning as hundreds of people, mainly youths who were wearing Zanu-PF regalia, flooded the streets, chanting party slogans and singing revolutionary songs.
A green haulage truck with a large portrait of President Mugabe stole the show when it entered the city along Leopold Takawira Avenue attracting a large crowd that followed it as it drove around the city centre.
Several vehicles that were also emblazoned with the President’s portrait joined in the procession.
Meanwhile, provincial spokesperson Cde Michael Sikhosana said arrangements have been made to transport people from suburbs that were far away from the venue.
“Our logistics team has organised transport to carry residents in remote suburbs as early as 8am. We urge people to come as early as possible,” he said.
President Mugabe has been addressing star rallies across provinces with tens of thousands of supporters turning up for the meetings.
Harare Province will be the last port of call for the President tomorrow.
