Presley Chweneyagae celebrated with massive love!

THE State Theatre in Tshwane was filled with laughter and heartfelt memories on Thursday. This as Mzansi gathered to honour the late actor, Presley Chweneyagae, affectionately known as Tobetsa or Cobrizi.

Presley passed away on May 27. He was celebrated for his legendary roles in productions like the Oscar-winning film, Tsotsi and hit telenovela, The River.

Known for his signature line: “Massive!” Presley’s spirit was honoured through moving speeches, live music and photos of his life and career. The theatre was filled to capacity, with additional viewing screens set up to accommodate the overflow crowd.

A-list actors and fellow co-stars, including Kenneth Nkosi, Terry Pheto, Thato Molamu, Warren Masemola, Sdumo Mtshali, Moshidi Motshegwa, Zenzo Ngqobe and Oros Mampofu were among those who came to pay their final respects.

Thato and Moshidi led the programme as MCs, holding the emotional event together with poise and grace. Kenneth, who shared the screen with Presley in Tsotsi, reflected on his legacy.
“That man loved to play. He trusted himself. He was authentic. It was easy working with Presley. We’ll be okay as long as we put God first,” he said.

Terry, who was also Presley’s co-star in Tsotsi, delivered a tearful tribute.
“We were young and hungry when we worked in that movie. Presley made history, he made us laugh and proud. He was sharp and unapologetic. Presley was our friend, our giant. You broke my heart,” she said.

Sdumo, who worked with Presley on several productions, offered words of comfort, especially to Presley’s son.
“We’re mourning with you, you are not alone. Working with your father was a masterclass. He was younger than me, but I still called him ‘Grootman’. You’ll hear many things about your dad – just keep showing up. To the family, I pray for you every day,” he said.

Zenzo, who was also part of Tsotsi and worked again with Presley in The River, became emotional as he recalled his words.
“I don’t even know what to say. Presley once said to me: ‘Zenzo, don’t ever forget these kids,’ and I’m here. Mama, I haven’t seen you since the incident, but I’ve seen you from a distance. Presley, we shall meet again,” he said.

Thursday’s memorial service followed the first tribute held in his hometown of Mahikeng, North West, on Tuesday. Both services drew a flood of tributes from family, fans, friends, and colleagues, proof of the massive impact Presley made on and off the screen.

Presley’s funeral service will be held in Tshwane on Saturday. – DailySun
