PRINCE Edward High School Under-15 Boys won the Harare Province Junior Football League knock-out trophy on Sunday after edging Ajax Sports Club of Mbare in a pulsating final at the school’s Main Arena.

The two-day tournament saw 24 teams from Harare Province participating from early Saturday morning culminating in one of the most fiercely-contested junior matches.

Only one goal separated the two teams. Friendly Academy took third place after out-shooting Dzivaresekwa Academy on penalties during the third and fourth place decider.

Harare Province Junior League chairman, Cyprian Jaji, said the tournament was a testimony to the fact that junior football is not dead in Zimbabwe.

Jaji said the province has 26 teams each in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 categories and two could not take part due to reasons beyond their control.

“We held two tournaments so far this year for the Under-13 and Under-17s, but this one is the most successful especially because we were successful in stemming out age cheating and also because we enjoyed the support of leading funeral services company, Moonlight as well as SportAIDS Project,” said Jaji.

He said Moonlight have indicated its willingness to bankroll the league next year while SportAIDS Project will also step up its efforts to inform and educate the junior players about the dangers posed by HIV/AIDS.

Jaji said the league has contributed players who are now playing top flight football citing the likes of Tatenda Mukuruva from Budiriro Gunners now with Dynamos, Thomas Kadyaridzire from Total Academy and Nicholas Muchadeyi now with Chicken Inn having come from Budiriro Arsenal.
