A PRISON officer who vanished from his base in Hwange, has resurfaced in Bulawayo where he is selling airtime recharge cards in Fourwinds suburb. Tawanda Morgan Mukuwira, 23, of Famona, appeared before senior magistrate Sibongile Msipa charged with desertion. He told the court that he quit his job for air time vending in order to generate more income and finance his studies.
“I quit the job because I wanted to go to school and my salary wasn’t enough. I am now realising about $800 a month from selling airtime which is better than what I was earning,” said Mukuwira.
According to court papers, on June 25 last year, Mukuwira abandoned his post without notice.
He was later spotted selling airtime at Fourwinds shopping centre in Bulawayo, leading to his arrest.
Msipa charged Mukuwira with desertion as stated in the Prison and Correctional Services Act Chapter 7:11.
Mukuwira pleaded guilty to the charge and was remanded on $200 bail to June 30, 2014.
