LUPANE State University (LSU) has lifted the country’s flag high after it came first in the Africa International Tertiary Institutions debate competition held in Cotonou, Benin, recently. LSU’s Part Two Human Resources Management student Nompilo Nkomo outwitted her competitors and came out tops, beating 10 participating international universities.
Last year’s champions, Nigeria, were relegated to second place with the host Benin coming third.
The Impact Africa International Inter-tertiary Institution Debate competition is a prestigious debate contest pitting leading universities in Africa.
The competition, held under the auspices of the United Nations, is a platform for youths to engage on issues that affect their lives.
An excited Nkomo said she was very happy to win the tightly contested competition.
“I am very excited. It was actually my first win after coming close in other competitions,” she told Chronicle.
“I was relieved after I won having left my debating partner at home who had complications with his passport.”
After the country’s impressive results, the organisers resolved that LSU would host the event next year.
Winners are expected to participate in a work project in Japan.
