Two prison officers yesterday appeared in court facing allegations of helping a prisoner to escape from police custody during the Harare Agricultural Show.
Rudo Nyandoro (38) and Kudakawashe Mawadze (22) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Milton Serima facing allegations of assisting a prisoner to escape from lawful custody.

Mr Serima granted them bail of US$100 each.

It is the State case that on July 14, Nyandoro and Mawadze were deployed at the Harare Agricultural Show where they were conducting their duties, which included responsibility for eight prisoners.

It is alleged that the two devised a plan to facilitate the escape of one prisoner named Shadreck Chidhuza.

The court heard that Nyandoro and Mawadze divided the eight prisoners into two groups of four.

The State indicated that the two separated, each going in a different direction with four prisoners.

It is alleged that Mawadze released Chidhuze allowing him to escape.

The court heard Nyandoro and Mawadze purposefully separated the prisoners with the intention of facilitating the escape of Chidhuze.

Further investigations revealed that Nyandoro at one point received money through ecocash from Chidhuze’s sister.

However, the reasons for being given the money are not known to the State.
