THE Ntabazinduna Prisons and Correctional Services training depot yesterday concluded the 5th Commandant Sports Week that saw recruits and training officers competing in eight disciplines.
The sports week, which is part of the training programme saw eight groups of recruits and staff competing in five disciplines that included football, netball, volleyball, chess, tug of war, pool, darts and assault course at the depot in Ntabazinduna.
Addressing the prize giving ceremony, depot Commandant, Assistant Commissioner Somemore Gate said the sports week was not only about competition but a platform to showcase talent, promote team work, amongst participants, improve self-esteem, self-discipline and encourage sportsmanship.
“The sports week also presents an opportunity for officials from our organisation’s professional teams affiliated with top flight sports disciplines like soccer, netball and athletics to scout for potential players. This year’s week is being held under the theme “Promoting a healthy lifestyle through Sports”, hence we decided to invite Premier Service Medical Aid Society to carry out health checks, counselling and health education while our health team was also carrying out Covid-19 testing and vaccination,” he said.
Guest of honour, businessman, Josphat Kahwema said sports is a critical aspect of training as it teaches discipline, respect, friendship, leadership, resilience, team work and unifies communities.
“Games are being held under the backdrop of Covid-19 challenging us to embrace the new normal that requires social and physical distancing masking up getting tested and vaccinated,” he said.
Kahwema challenged recruits who will take up sports full time to consider life after active participation in sports. He said as a passionate farmer, businessman and trainer experience had taught him not to put his eggs in one basket as one never knows what tomorrow has in store for them.
“Gone are the days when popular sportsmen were expected to reign in poverty upon retirement the in thing these days is to embrace other income generating projects in various fields including agriculture.
