THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service will back their football teams — Flame Lily and Whawha — in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League next season. Flame Lily stormed into the top-flight league after winning the World Navi Northern Region Division One title. Whawha won the sole ticket into the Premiership following their successful campaign in the ZIFA Central Region Division One League.
And there was speculation the ZPCS could dump one of the franchises.
Responding to questions sent by The Herald, ZPCS public relations officer, Elizabeth Banda, said they would support the two teams.
Flame Lily were backed by BancEasy.
“The ZPCS is ecstatic by these promotions that come after years of trials and near promotions and the joint promotion of Flame Lily and Whawha Football Clubs into the Premiership demonstrates the determination by the ZPCS not only to take football to greater heights but other sporting activities as well. Our objectives of participating in Division One Football were among others, to gain promotion into the Premiership.
“Now that we have achieved this, we are now focused on staying in the top-flight league and, hopefully, lift the coveted trophy at some point.
“We appreciate that running a Premiership team is quite taxing, financially, more so if two teams are involved. It is against this backdrop that we hope to have on board willing partners to assist us in realising our dreams,” Banda said.
She also clarified the issue of coaches who guided them into the Premiership.
“With regards to Whawha FC, the team coach Luke Petros shall be retained,” said Banda.
“Whilst we wish to also retain Nesbert Saruchera as the coach to take Flame Lily into the Premier League, nothing concrete has been finalised to date.”
