WHEN one gets incarcerated, the general feeling is that life stops and there is no way one can invest in their skills set.
But prison life for one Maurice Peterson has proven to be a blessing in disguise. He literally struck gold recording his debut album while in the slammer, serving time.
The album entitled God Saved My Life is being sold for $2 each and the money goes into his bank account. The plan is that it will give him a giant fillip when he comes out of jail.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) spokesperson Superintendent Priscilla Mthembo said that Peterson was one of the prisoners who benefited from the rehabilitation institutionas numerous activities.
ZPCS engaged one of its ambassadors for Bulawayo Metropolitan province Clarence Garura of Kirah Music in their rehabilitation projects at Bulawayo and Khami prisons.
Garura revealed that since last year they had done a series of talent scouting events at Khami Prison and the talent in prisons left him in awe.
a?In an endeavour to identify and nurture untapped talent in prisons, we had auditions at Khami Prison and it is where I identified Maurice Peterson who is good in playing a guitar and singing.
a?After discovering the untapped talent in him I sharpened his act and he managed to record his first album courtesy of Kirah Music,a? said Garura.
The album is now being marketed and national tours are part of the plan.
a?We are now working on his videos and in no time we should be releasing the DVD album and at the same time we are working on modalities to launch the album soon,a? he said.
He revealed that the projects belong to individuals and they open bank accounts for them so they have savings.
a?When we are engaging in a project with an inmate, we open an account in his name and all his money will be deposited there so that he has savings and even when he needs some items when in prison, money is withdrawn to get all that he wants,a? said Garura. Garura called on the corporate world, individuals and churches to support this noble cause and partner ZPCS.
a?We are calling upon churches, individuals and the corporate world to partner with us as we maximise on rehabilitation programmes and we even need to purchase musical instruments and a PA system.a? .
