PRISONS countrywide are opening their gates for a week starting today to allow families and friends of inmates to visit them.

The week, which ends on December 14, is meant to give inmates a chance to reconnect with their loved ones, including their children.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi emphasised the importance of these visits.

“We urge visitors to bring their national identity cards and avoid bringing prepared food,” she stated.

“For security reasons, we recommend purchasing food from our premises, as external food is not permitted.”

“Families, friends, churches, and other stakeholders are invited to meet with inmates during this special week and are encouraged to bring small gifts or treats for them.

“The prison will also have braai stands available for those who wish to enjoy a meal together.

“Prison visits are vital in promoting the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders back into society.”

This initiative highlights the commitment to fostering family connections, which play a key role in the recovery and reintegration of inmates.
