‘Private Lives’ graces Reps Theatre

A classic comedy “Private Lives” has come to Reps Theatre. Noel Coward’s critically acclaimed play is about the battle of the sexes. It tells the hilarious tale of divorcees, Elyot and Amanda, who are honeymooning in the same French hotel with their respective new spouses, Sibyl and Victor.

Inevitably they meet and stay in rooms with adjoining balconies and so begin one of the most famous high-comedies ever written.
Realising they still love each other, Elyot and Amanda abandon their new spouses and run away to Paris, before rediscovering why they were unable to live together in the first place.

The comedy is directed by Zane E. Lucas, and the cast includes Alex Fairlie, Vanessa Vos, Munya Gurumatunhu, David Bvumbe and Tanaka Venegere.

The play reopens on January 7 in Theatre Upstairs, where it will run for two weeks. The play premièred in London’s West End in the early 1930s, with Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence famously in the lead roles.

Since that time it has enjoyed countless revivals, including popular current runs in the West End and on Broadway in the US.
“Ideal entertainment to get audiences laughing their way into 2014, this is a play filled with wit and charm and will have broad appeal to audiences of all ages,” said Mr Lucas, presenting his first production at Reps since “Hairspray” in 2012.

“Reps traditionally stages comedies or farces at New Year, and this year is no exception, and audiences will love this great play from the master himself,” said Stan Higgins for Reps Theatre.
