Private schools’ basketball teams off for US tourney

A TOTAL of 45 students from at least 10 local private schools left Harare for the United States on Sunday to participate in a basketball tournament.

The tournament will be held from August 28 to 30. Some of the students who will be taking part expressed their excitement to participate in this tournament.

Athletes in Action Zimbabwe coach Xavier Bwanya, who is part of the organising team, said the trip to the US will be an eye opener.

“Sport plays an important role in nurturing young people and we are happy to be taking this delegation to the United States. This is the first ever basketball delegation to the United States and we are happy to be taking them to the home basketball,” he said.

At least 45 young players from different schools will be part of the tour. The youngest of the students is 13 and the oldest is 18.

“The tour is bringing together five teams and we will be playing a minimum of six games. We have students from St John’s, St George, Gateway, Peterhouse, Lomagundi, Heritage, Watershed, Petra, CBC and from Bulawayo and Falcon College,” he said.

One of the travelling students Tinashe Junior Mutarisi was excited to be part of the travelling delegation.

“This is a good learning experience for us and we are all excited about this expedition. We can’t wait to learn from the best and we are counting down to this experience,” he said.
