Private schools soccer tourney roars into life

THE 15th edition of the Conference for Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe (CHISZ)’s soccer tournament will be held at Midlands Christian College (MCC) in Gweru from today to Sunday.

In addition to the hosts, the other secondary schools set to compete in the tournament are defending champions St John’s, St George’s, Gateway, Watershed College, Westridge, Peterhouse, Lomagundi College, Hillcrest, Goldridge, Falcon College, Kyle College, Masiyephambili and South Eastern College.

The event co-ordinator Tendai Nasaya said on Wednesday that all preparations had been completed.

“Everything is now in place for the hosting of the CHISZ soccer tournament, which is growing bigger and better every year. We want to extend our appreciation to our sponsors Sports Avenue for availing a $5,000 package for organising the event and prizes,” said Nasaya.

There would be teams and individual prizes such as player of the tournament, best goalkeeper, top goal scorer and the best coach.

A CHISZ select team would also be chosen after the tournament.

The tournament was launched in 2000 at Lomagundi College with four schools as a way of promoting the game among boys attending the country’s private schools.

Dynamos forward Farai Mupasiri, a former Lomagundi College student, is a product of this tournament.
