LOCAL professional golf players, eager to play the game on a regular basis have teamed up with some top amateurs to form a pro-am school that will see them play together.
Following the failure by Zambezi Tour and Zimbabwe Professional Golf Union to find sponsors the professionals have since found a way to keep themselves active.
Some of the professionals had since resorted to teaching the sport to new players and they believe the pro-school will keep them in the game until a time when sponsors come on board.
A top professional confirmed that they had set up a new pro-am school in which they play on Mondays and Fridays.
“We had become idle as professional golfers and we came up with the idea that we support each other by pledging US$10 per individual and some individuals were coming on board to support us.
“We are yet to find a stable sponsor but for the past three weeks we were getting help from individuals.
“The event will see the top five walking home rich. The first prize is usually a 35% of the amount on the table on the day,” said the professional.
Games were hard to come by for the professionals with the Zambezi Tour failing to retain most of the sponsors who bankrolled it last year.
The season is coming to an end and still no calendar for the professionals from the Zambezi Tour and they have played less than five events since the beginning of the year.
The Hwange Open, Tour Championships and the Harare Open are the only events confirmed so far.
“We are professionals and we survive on golf so we need sponsors who can come on with the pro-am school so that everyone is accountable. We have people like Tobias Dzangare, Wilson Seremane, Eddie Chikumba, Themba Sibanda among several others sponsoring the events’’.
