Chavhunduka has died.
He was 81.
Professor Chavhunduka died in Harare yesterday.
Mourners are gathered at his Mt Pleasant home along The Chase Road.
Prof Chavhunduka was also chairman of the MDC-T’s guardian council, an upper council of elders within the party structures.
MDC-T spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora confirmed the death saying burial arrangements were yet to be finalised.
“It is true that Prof Chavhunduka is late. He has been ill for some time. Burial arrangements are yet to be finalised,” said Mr Mwonzora.
The party’s organising secretary Mr Nelson Chamisa said he was working with the Chavhunduka family to accord the late professor a decent burial.
“We are working with the family to agree on a very decent send off for the illustrious and gallant son of the soil.
“But obviously we are doing so under directions from the family in terms of choices and other decisions,” said Mr Chamisa.
He said the MDC-T party and Zimbabwe at large had lost a think-tank and a wise adviser.
“He belonged to our council of wise men and women in the party.
“It is a big loss to the party and the whole nation at large. We have lost a part of the party and that amounts to a subtraction of wisdom in the MDC,” said Mr Chamisa.
Before the 2011 MDC-T congress, Prof Chavhunduka was the party’s secretary for integration in the national executive.
Prof Chavhunduka was formerly the University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor.
