The 47th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council is organised by the African Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the host country, Equatorial Guinea.

The two-day Session is being attended African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and AU Executive Council chairperson and Angolan Minister of External Relations Tete Antonio.

Prof Murwira, who is the Sadc Council of Ministers chairperson, is expected to make interventions during deliberations.

Some of the objectives of the meeting is to deliberate on fast tracking of the integration process in Africa, brainstorm on the report and matrix of the Division of Labour between the AU, Regional Economic Communities and Member States as well as consider reports of the African

Continental Free Trade Area and the 2025 AU theme of the Year implementation status.

The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting was conceptualised in 2017 as the principal forum for the AU and Regional Economic Communities to align their work and coordinate the implementation of the continental integration agenda, replacing the June/ July summits.

This was after AU Heads of States and Governments made two key decisions in January 2017.

The decision sought to ensure a clear division of labour and effective collaboration between the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the Regional Mechanisms (RMs), the Member States, in line with the principle of subsidiarity and it also directed that the

AU Bureau hold a coordination meeting with the RECs, with the participation of the Chairpersons of the RECs, the AUC and RMs.

This is in line with Article 7 of the Protocol on Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, which states that in place of the June/July Summit, the Bureau of the Assembly shall hold a coordination meeting with the RECs with the participation of the Chairpersons of the RECs, the Commission and RMs.

The Commission shall coordinate and harmonise the activities of the Parties for the Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
