The IPM day is celebrated globally to recognise the efforts of professionals whose efforts have delivered successful projects, and the theme for the country’s celebrations is ‘Project Management: The Power of the Profession’.
Guest of honour at the event will be the Minister of Public Works Joel Gabbuza, who is expected to brief delegates on the status of Public Works projects in Zimbabwe.
He would also speak on the challenges that both public and private sectors are facing in terms of project delivery on time, within budget and according to specifications.
Project Management Institute of Zimbabwe president Mr Robert Taruwona said the event was aimed at appreciating the role of project managers and at the same time raise greater awareness of the profession.
“The goal is to find a way to connect project managers around the world in a moment of pride and appreciation and to communicate to everyone that project management is a universal language.
“Project Management as a discipline or profession is considered by many as the ‘unappreciated profession’ because of the challenge it faces in being understood and appreciated at the senior management executive levels in non-engineering organisations” he said.
The IPM celebrations are a brainchild of American Frank Saladis after realising that project management is the driving force behind organisational success in that it provides the strategic edge to meet the challenges of a diverse and continually changing environment.
In terms of IPM day activities, the PMIZ is set to host a conference and an exhibition where several speakers are scheduled to present papers.
The papers are expected to address the challenge of bringing project management to the fore in organisations and develop a culture of management by project.
According to the organisers, the conference is an opportunity to share experiences and learn from field veterans who have managed projects on an international scale and thus have a wealth of experience.
It is expected that the occasion will hopefully motivate project managers to develop themselves professionally (through certification), and strengthen leadership skills.
One of the most effective ways to implement organisational strategy with a reasonable probability for success is through projects.
Internationally many organisations have embraced the use of project management methodologies, tools and techniques.
