Prof Chavunduka (82), who was also the vice-chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe between 1992 and 1996 and also a member of the MDC-T guardian council, died of throat cancer on Friday last week.
The late Prof Chavunduka was instrumental in the establishment of Zinatha and conservation of indigenous knowledge systems.
He was born on August 31 1931 at St Augustine’s Mission in Penhalonga and did his primary education at St Faith’s Mission in Makoni and Inanda Primary School in Durban, South Africa.
He then proceeded to St Augustine’s Mission and Goromonzi High School for his secondary education.
Prof Chavunduka did his university education at the universities of California and Manchester.
He lectured at the then University of Rhodesia and after independence held various positions at the UZ’s Department of Sociology and was then appointed vice-chancellor.
He is survived by his wife Rachel and five children. MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai and officials from party and non-governmental organisations attended the burial.
