Although Progress Chipfumo has tried to shake off the bad boy tag from his career through a new album that carries divine connotations, mischief could still be at the talented guitarist’s doorstep. It has emerged that Chipfumo’s new album, “Hold My Hand”, carries some lyrics originally done by emerging reggae musician Phanuel “Sancho” Nyagumbo. On a track titled “Tapera”, Chipfumo reproduced lyrics from
Sancho’s song “Same Poto” off his album with the same title that was released in 2012.
Sancho has filed a copyright infringement complaint with the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association and could soon take legal action against Chi-pfumo.
The rising reggae musician is a bitter man. “It is not fair. I take Progress as my brother, but he has decided to rob me this way,” Sancho told Herald Entertainment.
“I used to perform with him at his weekly shows in Highfield where my song was the crowd’s favourite. I did not know he had evil intentions. Maybe he was jealousy about the way the song was received.
“I was happy that I was working with a senior musician in promoting my work. I did not know my brother would have sinister motives.
“If he wanted the song, he could have approached me and we could arrange a remix for his album because it would have benefited us both.
He tried to be shrewd, but I will not let him exploit me.”
Zimura confirmed Sancho approached them with a copyright infringement complaint.
However, Chipfumo claims he got the song from a member of Best of All Musica only identified as Sakis. Chi-pfumo claims he paid Sakis US$140 out of the US$200 they agreed on for copyright transfer.
“Sakis came to our show and sang the song. He told us it was his song and offered it to me. He said he had recorded the song, but never released it,” said Chipfumo.
“Since I had not heard the song anywhere, I was convinced it was his and we had an agreement. He actually wanted US$50, but we later settled for US$200. I was surprised to hear Sancho claiming he recorded and released the song.”
Sancho is now compiling a comprehensive report outlining the lyrics in question to present to Zimura for a legal procedure.
