Prominent educationist Mugwangi dies

Zimbabwe has lost an eminent professional, educationist and strategist, Mr Mberikunashe Piriwiri Mugwangi. He died on Monday, 11 November 2013 at the Avenues Clinic. He was 72.

His professional career started in 1967 as a Maths teacher at Chrome Secondary School in Shurugwi. He also served as head of the school and was later promoted to become a lecturer at Mkoba Teachers College where he served for more than 10 years.

Mr Mgwangi became a Director of Education, Midlands Province while he also contributed to the Zimbabwe Open University as a part-time Regional Coordinator between 1993 and 1997.

In 1998 he was appointed the ZOU regional director for the Midlands Regional Centre, a position he held until his untimely death on Monday.

Through the years he has gained a prominent position in society due to the fearless, committed, exemplary and principled way he handled himself and his work.

Mr Mugwangi was a member of the Zimbabwe Open University Council since 2006, and had recently been appointed onto the current session.

“We have lost a committed, genuine and honest pillar and leader who loved and lived for justice. He loved and showed mercy and walked humbly before God as we are instructed in Malachi 6:8,” said Professor Primrose Kurasha, the Vice Chancellor of the Zimbabwe Open University.

Mr Mugwangi will be buried on Friday, 15 November, 2013 at Mutapa Cemetery in Gweru. Mourners are gathered at Long Acres, Heat Road in Harben Park, Gweru.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Mgwangi, five children and several grandchildren.
