PROMINENT Bulawayo lawyer Mr Sindiso Mazibisa (36) is being investigated over an alleged $350 000 swindle, police confirmed yesterday. Mazibisa, of Cheda and Partners, is claimed to have conned a South Africa-based local businessman, Mr Titus Ncube, who was trying to buy shares in a mining operation owned by the lawyer.
Mr Mazibisa was a losing MDC candidate for the Magwegwe Constituency in the 31 July elections.
Chronicle understands that Mr Mazibisa and Mr Ncube entered into negotiations over a mining deal sometime in November last year.
Under the deal, Mr Ncube was to pay Mr Mazibisa $400 000 for 36 percent shareholding in Goodenough Mine in Matobo District.
But problems developed around the evaluation of shares after Mr Ncube had made a part payment of $350 000 into Cheda and Partners’ Trust Bank account. Sources said Mr Ncube then demanded his money back.
“Mr Ncube was not satisfied with the deal particularly on the issue of the evaluation of shares and he then demanded his money back. It looks like Mr Mazibisa was evasive resulting in Mr Ncube reporting the matter to the police and they are now handling the case,” said the source.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed police had received a complaint from Mr Ncube.
“I can confirm that we are handling a $350 000 fraud case in which Mr Titus Ncube is the complainant, while Mr Sindiso Mazibisa is the accused. We have launched extensive investigations and Mazibisa is assisting us in that regard,” said Insp Moyo.
Mr Mazibisa is popular for handling high profile cases involving politicians, church wrangles and businesspeople.
The lawyer was not answering his mobile phone last night after several attempts to contact him.
